Prolight + Sound Prostage 2008 - Outdoor

This is already the second time that Prolight and Sound has offered a number of practical seminars on the outdoor display area. For this, a professional outdoor stage has been constructed, with a playable area of 160 square metres. In these seminars, technology and techniques are on offer with plenty of “hands on” experience. Participation is free of charge and is included in the price of the entrance ticket. The meeting point for all Pro Stage – Seminars is the INFOPOINT. Clothing appropriate to the open-air venue is recommended.

Setting up outdoor lighting

Martin Professional
Reinhard Gross

No floods or spots come anywhere near the power of the sun. That is why many lighting designs for open air events are, in the truest sense of the expression, mere “illusions”.

Knowledge of lighting ratios, of technical light magnitudes and the real capabilities of the equipment help everyone concerned to get the best out of the situation and to avoid disappointment.

That is not only true for floods and spots, but also for the use of LED technology. The tutor will concentrate particularly on the necessary basic knowledge and demonstrate what needs to be taken into account in the “struggle” between daylight and artificial light.

Tutor from Martin Professional will be Reinhard Gross

Rigging – Use of PPE: rescue in large stage roofs

Thomas Wahls + Team

What happens when someone on the rig has an accident and they    cannot then get out of the situation themselves?

What PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) against falling can be used to prevent this situation occurring – if any? What dangers exist nevertheless?

Did you know that rapid and secure rescue must be guaranteed at all times and specifically following an accident - both from a technical and an organisational point of view?

The tutor and his team will show, with the help of a spectacular practical demonstration, the procedures for rescues at height.

Thomas Wahls is a qualified scaffolder and rigger, as well as being an assessor for FISAT. Moreover he is a trainer and tutor on courses run by the VPLT (Association of professional lighting and sound engineers), as an “expert in event rigs” with now more than ten years’ experience in event technology.

Sound systems for open-air stages – a practical guide to working with line arrays

Thomas Adt

When using line arrays, numerous features particular to these systems need to be taken into account; only than can the optimum result be guaranteed.

The tutor will give an insight into the essential construction characteristics of line arrays and will also demonstrate specifically the latest HK line array in practice.

Thomas Adt has been with HK Audio for 16 years and is responsible for project planning and new products. He has the benefit of many years of experience as a sound engineer and is a passionate music researcher. His special area of interest is the psychology of music – what it is to ‘experience’ music.

Practical pyrotechnics on open-air stages

Friederike Unverzagt

Indoor fireworks normally take place in stable weather conditions. In-the-sky fireworks are always set off well away from the public areas, and also well away from where the pyrotechnician is.

But how does it work with pyrotechnics on an open-air stage? Wind and weather can have a crucial impact on their use and even prove a real threat.

The tutor will explain and demonstrate which effects can be used on an open-air stage and what must be taken into account in doing so.

Friederike Unverzagt is one of the very experienced pyrotechnicians in Germany. She has worked on countless productions with German artists such as Peter Maffay and Marius Müller-Westernhagen and also on international productions such as the opening ceremony of the Asian games in Qatar.

Digital mixing consoles at Live Sound
Digidesign

Digital consoles play a vital role in modern production and are an everyday feature of life on permanent stages.  For the tour segment, the constantly changing conditions mean there are significantly more questions concerning their use. How do their modes of operation change? What are the differences to the analogue world? How do they influence the sound and how can the (analogue) peripheral equipment be integrated purposefully? Is digital multicore better? Which interfaces do I need? Additionally, there will be lectures on the technical qualities of digital mixing consoles including aspects such as storing individual parameters, automation, plug-ins, etc.

The speakers from Digidesign are Robb Allan (Digidesign) and Laärs Lüdemann (Mega Audio).

Dealing correctly with wind loads – update on the regulations
Michael Brombacher

Open-air stages are inevitably subject to particularly stringent demands. Wind loads, for instance, can turn a pleasant festival into a nightmare experience, if one does not know exactly what one is doing and doesn’t have the appropriate materials and manpower. Using the demonstration stage, the tutor will explain what needs to be taken into account in the open-air business.

Michael Brombacher is the Managing Director of Megaforce; he and his company specialise in open-air stage construction.
